Gasworks 1860's
Isabelle Russell married John Robb in 1860. In 1861 she was living nearby with In-Laws also with her six month old son, William. John, meanwhile was working as a Harpooner on whalers out of Dundee. In the 1871 census Isabelle was living here in Gas Wynd with four children. She was working part time in a Flax Mill where Hendry's Wynd is now, just nearby. The gas works was to the north of Gas Wynd - pongy I imagine, but for compensation there was a wee bakers shop on the corner of the high street. This level of detail can be gleaned from the National Library of Scotland collection of old Ordnance Survey maps as well as other sources. The Robb family can be traced back to Aberdeenshire while my branch comes through nearby Largo and Dysart in the 17th century to here in 'Abbotshall' (The Abbot was the Bishop of Dunfermline in the middle ages)So much history in a street with a 'dull' name. Kudos to the city council for retaining it!Malcolm Robb.
