Mysterious rocks of Browning Mountain, IN
browning mountain. mysterious indian rocks that are not native to the area weighing tons on top of a very large hill overlooking a valley. they are believed to be an indiana burial ground. warning extremely difficult to get to by foot only.It sure isnt a very good picture on Google Earth. All i can see are trees. Am i just not looking in the right spot?

BlueflameThis marker is off by a few miles to the east. Actually location in google earth is 39 03'48.18"N 86 15'58.75" W. You can clearly see the stones, or at least the big ones. I have not heard a solid explanation of how they got there. There is aweb pagewith some good ground-level pictures.

'Eternity is a very long time, especially towards the end.' Stephen HawkingThe pictures on that site don't quite show the extent of the stones. Most of the western facing side of the hill is covered in stones (although the biggest ones are those in the photos). I took a couple hundred photos, but lost them all after some computer problems. I found some stones that seemed to have boring holes, and one had an imbedded piece of corroded metal (I think...but I am not familiar with old mining tools). Graffiti on the stones dates to mid-early 1800's. Indiana University has some archaeological studies from the area, but I don't know if they researched this hill. Hopefully someone has or will clarify this.Everything written about this site in your original posting is unsubstantiated-- more innuendo than any facts. Actually a very ambiguous posting here ( mid 18th century writing/ graffiti )-- says whom? After looking at the pics of the rocks-- they look modern to me-- but hey I don't know either! I will look into it. Can you please be more specific about the reference to Indiana University like who and when did anyone from IU look into this?Sorry-- but this whole thing is very unbelievable. Just lots of opinionated speculation without any facts. I could come up with several ideas about the source of the stones-- just use your imagination.Lots of speculation here. I think the stones are recent additions (modern). Whom did you get permission from to visit the site since it is private property?

Seeking facts and avoiding dramatic speculation.NOthing about this site at Indiana University or Monroe County. Google "Browning Mountain" you will just find ghost story books sited in above thread.

Well, the stones weren't quarried there-no sign of any quarrying in the area. I won't speculate much further, but I don't know why they would be there if they weren't placed. No permission needed. Not private property-entirely withing Hoosier Natl. Forest.
